iOS 16 users all know they are on old devices and are losing access to a lot of apps, including this platform. Current and future legacy users would still benefit substantially from at least an ability to upload their photos, even if many other features are not available.
iOS 16 is the current legacy version of iOS, buuuut it is a weird one:
It continues to receive security updates, e.g. official support.
All devices that supported iOS 17 (the current iOS requirement for the app at time of posting) also support iOS 18. There is virtually no reason to provide support for iOS 17 over iOS 18.
Practically, this adds only one model, the iPhone 8 (and 8+), which is still in use by slow adopters and users with limited means.
On the silicon level, the iphone 8 shares its cpu/chipset with the iphone X (A11 “Bionic”), which is currently supported by the app on iOS 18. (and so there are no concerns about performance here)
The 8 was the year’s budget model of the same year as the iphone X, and continued to be popular as users were wary of the face recognition unlock. It was available for purchase well after the X was discontinued as the budget option.
The 8+ was among the first generation of devices that had multiple cameras. It’s still a good / “good enough” camera.
(if a developer wouldn’t mind just trying to compile with the os support version set to iOS 16 to see what happens, we could have a conversation.)
